Building a BBW BDSM Site
Another reason why I decided to go into the direction of a kink site was a great comment from a review site about my old xxx site. In his review, the reviewer commented that “her last name is Shibari, yet there is no shibari content, or any fetish content, on the site” or something to that effect. He was right – I didn’t. It was hypocritical, especially for BDSM community people, to find me online only to see that I only did straight vanilla scenes.
Shortly after splitting with my old webmasters, I decided to go on a photo shoot roadtrip up the western coast. I went from San Francisco to Seattle and back down to Los Angeles, doing photo shoots with anyone with a kink look or style to their photography that would be willing to work with me on a trade basis. Some shoots were purely for modeling purposes, but most were kink-related. Some of my favorite images (the header graphic on kellyshibarixxx.com and my avatar image on my online profiles) were taken during that trip. I also had an amazing experience shooting with Lee Chris in Seattle, who, under Maria Shadoes’ guidance, gave me my longest full-body suspension to date (45 minutes) <–(more on this later).
I came back to LA with a bunch of content but nowhere to put it. I also didn’t have any video content. I decided to work out trades with producers that I knew – I would do a scene for them in exchange for a scene of theirs. I bartered a lot, and didn’t get paid for a bunch of shoots for about half a year. I didn’t have the capital to invest in a site, but I did have something that producers could use, so that’s what I offered. I also bartered design and marketing services as well. 2009 was a tough year for everyone – the recession was in full gear. Bartering worked out best for a lot of things that I did, not only for me but also for the people who wanted work done.
During this time, I was introduced to Simon, who is now my webmaster and business partner for PaddedKINK, by a mutual friend. Through chatting with him we decided that a BBW BDSM site might be a good fit for the Spicecash “family”. We discussed everything from the site name to the design to how the content should be presented. He’s been a godsend and does what I don’t know how to do, and vice versa. There are also areas where we share responsibilities.
Working with Simon has been great – he’s been able to discuss not only the direction of the site but also lets me know when issues are being addressed, such as server issues, so that I can keep the members informed. So far there have been no huge issues to speak of, no major delays, and I really think that it’s because we have an open line of communication and the ability to bounce ideas off of each other – something I didn’t have with my former webmaster.
